Before you rush head long into a home remodeling job and pick the first remodeling contractor you find, here’s one of the most critical points you should not overlook:
Get three quotes ! In fact, large corporations and governments do it all the time.
Good Reasons For Getting Three Quotes
It doesn’t matter whether you’re building an addition to your home or you want a large remodeling job done, or even a new shower installed, it just makes sense to obtain several free estimates from building contractors or any home improvement and remodeling contractor.
Not only can obtaining several free estimates give you the opportunity to save money and find a contractor you’re comfortable with, it will also give you the chance to see the different approaches that different contractors will take toward a certain job. It will also give you a feel for just how knowledgeable they are on the subject, and they can give you a lot of different ideas for how to approach the job based on your goals.
For instantce, one contractor may suggest a $2000 brick wall be put up, while another might suggest a less expensive and time consuming $400 veneer approach. You will often times get ideas you had no idea were even possible when speaking with several different contractors.
While you’re waiting for the contractors to arrive for your free estimate, check into the different companies. For example:
- Make sure that their licensing and insurance are in order
- Check into their backgrounds
- Ask for references
- Check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure no major complaints have been filed against them
Checking References From Previous Customers
One of the best ways to glean information about a home improvement contractor you’re considering is to talk with past customers. If you want to check out a repairing building contractor’s ability to get the job done on time, for the right price and have quality work done, then find out how previous customers have faired. A good repairing building contractor won’t have any problem with providing references giving you the names of customers to speak with.
If they’re not willing to do this, be very wary. In fact, our advice is to stay away, unless the building contractor’s so new in the field references aren’t possible, but other background checks are.
If you’re concerned the customers you’ve been given to speak with are those who are pre-programmed to say only good things, ask if you can actually see photos or visit the residence of former customers to see the work yourself. If possible, speak with other customers when you’re in the building contractor’s office.
Things To Consider When Getting An Estimate
When you receive the quotes you should read them over carefully. A good written estimate should include a basic materials list, their costs as well as labor cost. An extensive quote will also include a list of what can be expected, i.e., a detailed outline of the job’s schedule and materials. Take your time before making a decision. I know you’re anxious to get the ball rolling when an exciting new project is in order, but spending a few days of extra consideration can save you piles of money and possibly years of regret. It deserves careful consideration. Choose the building contractor after you’ve thoroughly checked them out.
And this is important……
Remember that while the lowest bid might be the best one financially, if the remodeling contractor doesn’t check out on all other points, it’s not the best bid. Compare pricing estimates, contractor backgrounds, work schedules, quality of materials used, and other factors before choosing.
Above All Else, Be Patient
